We’ve seen the return of hair accessories in the ‘80s and ‘90s and some beauty trends that remain iffy to this date. We’ve also seen a peek of Y2k fashion as its comeback features loud prints, stringy tops, baby tops, mini skirts, low-rise jeans and not forgetting...bejewelled everything!
As we’re easing into a less afraid and safer world, with all the precautions, vaccinations and social justice movements in 2021, we’re also growing and stepping into a new era of boldness. People, especially Gen Z fashionistas, are learning to express themselves in the form of embellishments and body adornments.
Just the typical accessories won’t do and might even be seen as ‘boring’ now in 2022. Instead, we’re looking at bling: crystal eye makeup, rhinestone pedicures, bedazzled headpieces, body piercings and tooth gems.
Ear Curation and Dermal Piercings

Ear piercings are nothing new, but curating a cohesive and ratio-ed look for all your ear piercings can be challenging. It’s no small feat when people get experimental and innovative with striking piercings, both on the ears and around the body. Ever since Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala 2019 dress, I’d imagine everyone would want to look like they’re always shimmering and dripping jewels.
As for dermal piercings, Lil Uzi Vert’s forehead piercing is proof that the trend was set, and also a case study for those who’re thinking of body adornments but aren’t sure yet.

Crystal Makeup

Temporary jewels are also rising amongst netizens. With possibilities of lock-downs and having to stay home, we’re taking any excuse to go big on our makeup looks. Jazzing it up isn’t just for special occasions anymore — something that teens used to wear only to music festivals is infiltrating red carpets and becoming a daily norm!
We’ve seen Lupita Nyong’o at the Miu Miu Nuit Club with gem eye-shadow, Machine Gun Kelly at the 2021 MTV VMAs with pearls sculpting his face, Dua Lipa with crystals lining her eyes at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.
Of course, what really made the trend sing since 2019 was HBO’s hit series Euphoria, with Kristen Sage Coleman’s spellbinding work in the characters’ makeups (where she also took home the Emmy Award for Outstanding Contemporary Makeup in 2020).

Tooth Gems

Minimalist is and always will be a trend. We’re simplifying teeth grills and going for dainty tooth gems instead. Tooth gems have been around for a while, but never this popular. Celebrities such as Travis Barker, Charli D’Amelio and Drake have been known to glamour and bejewel the dental way. Maybe it’s time to book your next dental appointment to add a little sparkle and a new beam to your smile!
The verdict? We’re seeing a more hopeful year and we’re here for all shiny, sparkly things — the bigger the better; the more the merrier! Find your next bling thing.
